The Condition of Being Here: Drawings by Jasper Johns – Public Programs

The new Menil Drawing Institute will host a series of public programs in conjunction with its inaugural exhibition, The Condition of Being Here: Drawings by Jasper Johns.

Art critic John Yau will deliver a lecture at the Menil Collection’s Main Building on Wednesday, January 9. On Sunday, January 13 assistant curator Kelly Montana will speak on Jasper Johns’s Untitled, 2015 as part of the museum’s Curators Lecture Series. Roberta Bernstein, author of Jasper Johns: Catalogue Raisonné of Painting and Sculpture, will hold a talk on Wednesday, January 23. On Saturday, January 26 Da Camera Young Artists of Houston will perform a concert in celebration of the exhibition. All events are free and open to the public.

The Condition of Being Here: Drawings by Jasper Johns surveys the artist’s six-decades long career with works spanning 1954 to 2016. The exhibition traces the development of Johns’s signature motifs—flags, maps, targets, numbers, flattened figures—across a range of media including graphite, ink, pastel, oil stick, and watercolor. Including several promised gifts to the Menil Collection as well as loans from the artist himself, the exhibition will be on view through January 27.
