Essay by Michael Schreyach

The first publication solely devoted to Anne Truitt’s paintings. Known for her totemic wood sculptures painted in subtle shades of color, Truitt also produced innovative paintings on canvas. Rarely exhibited during her lifetime, and reproduced here for the first time, are sixteen paintings made between 1972 and 1993.

Michael Schreyach’s essay analyzes the compositional elements in Truitt’s work, particularly the tension between two and three dimensionality that characterized both her painting and sculpture. Through these pictorial and material qualities, Truitt manifested the metaphysical meaning of her art — or, as she described it, “the sharp delight of watching what has been inside one’s own most intimate self materialize into visibility.”
