Katharina Fritsch’s proposal “Hahn / Cock” is a giant rooster in ultramarine blue. In the setting of Trafalgar Square, the monumental scale and bold color of this extraordinary animal render the situation unreal, bringing a sense of hallucination and uncertainty to the genteel 18th century architecture. The rooster, a popular motif in modernist art, symbolizes regeneration, awakening and strength. The sculpture will be unveiled in 2013.
Katharina Fritsch lives and works in Düsseldorf. She represented Germany in the 1995 Venice Biennale and has had one-person exhibitions at the Dia Center for the Arts, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Tate Modern, London; the Kunstmuseum, Basel; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Kunsthaus Zurich among others.
