Press Release

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce David Armstrong: Your Picture on My Wall, the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street.

This exhibition will include 27 color photographs--twenty landscapes and seven portraits--made during the past two years, as well as a large collage installation of unframed photographs, both black & white and color, which will be the centerpiece of the exhibition.

Over the years, David Armstrong has gradually produced a distinct body of work. Built around his sense of beauty, his photographs create a quiet, romantic, idealized world, infused with a gentle light and always beautifully composed.

The landscapes in this exhibition, mostly of rural or garden settings, were taken during the artist's travels in New York, New England, Texas, Germany, France, and Great Britain. All are shot in Armstrong's signature soft focus, drawing attention away from surface detail and toward broader questions of composition, color variation, and subtleties of light. The seven portraits of young men are also invested in beauty, the softness of the landscapes countered by the delicate detail found in the faces of the artist's striking subjects.

This will be David Armstrong's sixth exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery since 1993. Armstrong first exhibited his work in 1977 and has had one-person shows in New York, Boston, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Lisbon, Munich, and Amsterdam. His work was included in last year's exhibition Visions from America: Photographs from The Whitney Museum of American Art, 1940-2001. Armstrong's second book, All Day Every Day, concentrating on his color landscapes and interiors, was published last year by Scalo Verlag.

David Armstrong: Your Picture on My Wall will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 523 West 24th Street (between 10th & 11th Avenues) through February 21, 2004. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
