Matthew Marks is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Nayland Blake at 523 West 24th Street.
Double Fantasy will include new mixed-media sculptures, a video projection and a group of large-scale drawings. In the sculptures, Blake continues to explore ideas about food and weight-gain, as well as issues involved in being a couple. In one work, Blake has constructed a body suit for himself that is lined with weights that match his boyfriend's total body weight. A video projection depicts Blake wearing this suit and feverishly tap dancing on top of a house-like platform. The suit's weight affects each movement, sometimes moving in tandem with Blake's body and sometimes imposing constraints.
Blake will also exhibit a new portfolio of nine cibachrome photographs, made in collaboration with Nan Goldin, which document an installation in which he lined the walls of his mother's apartment with gingerbread. The images depict Blake and his mother in this transformed setting.
Nayland Blake: Double Fantasy will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 523 West 24th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) through May 13, 2000. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 to 6:00 PM.
