Press Release

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Sam Taylor-Wood at 522 West 22nd Street & 523 West 24th Street. This is her first one-person exhibition in New York.

Sam Taylor-Wood works in film and photography. At 522 West 22nd Street, Taylor-Wood will mount her most ambitious film installation to date. Titled "Third Party", it consists of seven 16 mm film projections, projected on the four walls of the gallery. The work depicts a small party filmed simultaneously by seven cameras. Each camera focuses on a different character or a specific part of the party. Ambient sound will fill the gallery, permitting the viewer to experience their visit as a participant or a voyeur.

At 523 West 24th Street Sam Taylor-Wood will show for the first time the complete series of recent photographs called Soliloquies. These works are each made in two parts, a large photograph of a single figure below which is a horizontal predella photographed with a 360º camera. All of Taylor-Wood's work deals with human relationships and the subtle boundaries between attraction and repulsion, reality and fiction, and the material and the spiritual.

Sam Taylor-Wood lives and works in London and began exhibiting her work in 1991. She has had several one-person exhibitions in several museums including the Kunsthalle Zurich in 1997/8, Milan's Prada Foundation in 1998, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington and the Kunstverein Stuttgart in 1999. Taylor-Wood was included in the 1997 Venice Biennale where she won the "Illy Café Prize for Most Promising Young Artist" and her work is currently on view in the Carnegie International exhibition in Pittsburgh.

Sam Taylor-Wood will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 522 West 22nd Street and 523 West 24th Street (both between 10th and 11th Avenues) through February 26, 2000. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 to 6:00pm.
