Press Release

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce that the next exhibition in his gallery at 1018 Madison Avenue will be Richmond Burton.

The exhibition will consist of nine oil paintings completed in the last year, as well as a new group of drawings and prints. The works vary widely in scale, ranging from just under two feet to the largest painting the artist has produced to date, measuring 7 by 18 feet. The drawings employ a variety of media including watercolor, gouache, ink, oil and graphite on handmade papers. The exhibited prints include two new etchings and two new woodcuts, the latter printed with 32 different colors each.

The works in this exhibition have undergone a dramatic stylistic shift with the elimination of the underlying drawn-in grid, always a feature visible beneath the overlapping layers of paint in the artist's previous abstract canvases. While still retaining an allover series of marks, the shapes have been enlarged in many of the paintings, often with more variations in scale within a single work. The palette, too, has grown more complex, with brighter and more striking juxtapositions of color.

In the past year Richmond Burton has had one person gallery exhibitions in Boston and Dallas, and has been included in the group exhibitions, Recent Acquisitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and 25 Americans: Painting in the 90s at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

A catalogue with 25 color reproductions will be published to accompany the exhibition and includes an interview with the artist by Lawrence Rinder. It will be available for $20 postage paid.
