April 28 - June 25, 1995

Press Release

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce To Whom it May Concern, a new sculpture by Richard Serra, the next exhibition at his West 22nd Street Gallery.

Richard Serra's installation will consist of 9 free standing Cor-Ten steel plates, each measuring 22 feet long and 8 inches thick, with heights of 65, 70, or 75 inches, spaced at regular intervals across the 5,000 square foot gallery. This work will be the largest indoor sculpture Serra has shown in New York since he exhibited Marilyn Monroe - Greta Garbo at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1981.

To Whom it May Concern expands on ideas Serra introduced in his ongoing "Elevational Series" in 1972 and developed most recently in two works realized in Europe, The Hours of the Day, 1990 (Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Holland), and Elevations for L'Allee de la Mormaire, 1993 (Private Collection, France).

Richard Serra To Whom it May Concern will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery at 522 West 22nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, through 25 June 1995. Hours: Thursday through Sunday, 12:00 to 6:00pm.
