Matthew Marks is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Gary Hume in the second floor gallery at 1018 Madison Avenue.
This will be the second one-person exhibition in New York for Gary Hume, a thirty-two year old English painter, his first having been presented by this gallery in February 1992.
The eight paintings presented represent a significant new direction for Hume in that figurative imagery is now clearly present. Hume's new paintings, as in his earlier work, are made with lacquer paint on panels. The paintings are characterised by a highly reflective surface and a unique and strangely beautiful palette.
Since his last exhibition in New York, Gary Hume has shown his work in Los Angeles, London, Cologne, Rome, and Vienna. He was one of fourteen artists included in "Unbound: Possibilities in Painting", the important exhibition of international artists held at the Hayward Gallery in London earlier this year.

This exhibition will be on view in our second floor gallery at 1018 Madison Avenue, which is located between 78th and 79th Streets.
