Matthew Marks is pleased to announce that his next exhibition will be Ellsworth Kelly: Plant Drawings. The exhibition will consist of approximately thirty works on paper dating from 1960 to 1992.
Ellsworth Kelly has been making drawings of plants and flowers since the late 1940s and continues to do so today. These drawings are central to any understanding of his art, containing as they do the germinative ideas for most of his paintings and sculpture. The plant drawings are, for the most part, deceptively simple line drawings made in graphite or ink. They are quiet, elegant works which celebrate the line and have often been overlooked in previous exhibitions and books. This exhibition marks the first time a large group of Kelly's plant drawings, showing the full range of this work, has been brought together.
A fully illustrated catalogue including an essay by the renowned poet John Ashbery will accompany the exhibition.
