Press Release

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce that his next exhibition will be Georg Baselitz: Pastels, Watercolors, Drawings. This exhibition will be the first in the United States devoted entirely to recent drawings by Baselitz. The works in the exhibition document the significant changes which have occurred in Baselitz's work over the past three years and are executed in a wide range of media including gouache, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, ink and graphite.

The exhibition will include a number of works form the "Das Motiv" series, which have been described by Diane Waldman as having a quality of "Matissian luxe, calm et volupte." In these works from the late 1980s, Baselitz is especially concerned with light, color and the physical properties of pastel.

Baselitz's more recent works on paper have grown increasingly abstract. Included in the exhibition are several drawings made last year in which the figurative element is nearly unrecognizable and which at first glance appear completely abstract.

A number of small graphite drawings will be shown which Baselitz uses as working studies for his paintings. These works, seldom exhibited, allow the viewer a rare opportunity to see a major artist working out his ideas in an informal manner.

A fully illustrated color catalogue will be published with texts by Franz Dahlem and the artist, specially written for this occasion.
