Matthew Marks is pleased to announce his next exhibition will be new paintings by Gary Hume. This will be Gary Hume's first one-person exhibition in the United States.
Hume is a twenty-nine year old British painter and one of a small number of provocative young artists who began to exhibit their work in London in the past few years. The majority of these artists, who include Ian Davenport, Fiona Rae, Angela Bulloch, Michael Landy, Damien Hirst, and Rachel Whiteread, studied at the Goldsmith College of Art in South London. Gary Hume has recently exhibited with these artists in several important group exhibitions including "The British Art Show" at the Hayward Gallery and "Broken English" at the Serpentine Art Gallery in London, and "Confrontations" at the ReIna Sofia in Madrid. He has also had one-person exhibitions in London and Cologne in the past year.
Gary Hume's exhibition in New York will include five large beautifully colored works which continue his ongoing series of "Door" paintings. The paintings are made of many layers of enamel lacquer paint carefully applied to laminated polystyrene and aluminum panels. The paintings in the exhibition were made in New York this fall where the artist set up a studio earlier in the year.
