Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Peter Fischli David Weiss: Polyurethane Objects, the next exhibition in his galleries at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard. This will be the Swiss artists’ first major exhibition in Los Angeles in over twenty-five years.
The exhibition includes works from their ongoing series of polyurethane objects, begun in 1982, depicting ordinary items found in the artists’ studio. Hand-carved and painted, these objects reject the notion of the readymade while discovering both humor and poetry in the clutter of daily life. In a 2006 interview Peter Fischli remarked, “Unlike Pop art, which turns one particular object into an icon, they are a collection of replicas of worthless everyday objects.”
Also included is Views of Airports, a slide presentation of 469 photographs the artists have taken over the past two decades, as well as the sculptures Stewardesses and Auto. Cast in aluminum and painted white to resemble plaster, Stewardesses features four ordinary yet dignified women dressed for work. Like caryatids on an ancient Greek temple, they stand calmly supporting the weight of their professional duties. Auto is a plaster sculpture of an average car at one-third scale. Together these three works touch on the artists’ lifelong practice of elevating the mundane to art.
Peter Fischli lives and works in Zürich. Peter Fischli and David Weiss began collaborating in 1979. They began working on this exhibition together before David Weiss died in 2012.
Fischli and Weiss presented their work at Documenta 8 (1987) and Documenta 10 (1997). They represented Switzerland at the 1995 Venice Biennale. At the 2003 Venice Biennale they won the Golden Lion prize for the work Questions. Their 1996 retrospective, In A Restless World, was organized by the Walker Art Center and traveled to San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Boston. In 2006 Tate Modern, London, organized another retrospective, Flowers and Questions, which traveled to the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg. Recent solo exhibitions were held at the Art Institute of Chicago (2011) and the Serpentine Gallery, London (2013).
Peter Fischli David Weiss: Polyurethane Objects will be on view at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard, from January 18 through April 12, 2014, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
