Robert Adams

Robert Adams (b. 1937) has been photographing the American landscape for almost 50 years. His photographs emphasize the redemptive beauty of nature in the face of humans' widespread and unremitting use of the land. In 1989 the Philadelphia Museum of Art organized a retrospective of Adams's work, and in 1997 his photographs were included in Documenta X. Adams was awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship in 1994 and the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in 2009.

The artist’s retrospective exhibition, The Place We Live, a Retrospective Selection of Photographs at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut (through October 28, 2012). Organized by the Yale University Art Gallery, the exhibition contains over 300 prints, and has traveled to the following institutions: the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Denver Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. After Yale, the exhibition will travel to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, January 15 – May 18, 2013), Josef Albers Museum Quadrat (Bottrop, Germany, Summer 2013), Jeu de Paume (Paris, February 10 – May 18, 2014), and the Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland, Summer 2014).
