Peter Cain

Peter Cain had his first one-person exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery in 1992, and he exhibited at the gallery until his death in 1997. Cain first gained attention for paintings of cars featuring new and unusual forms, based on photographs but distorted and cropped in radical ways. Jerry Saltz has written, "Cain's great accomplishment is that although all of his paintings derive from photographs, none of them picture the world as if seen through a lens."

Cain (born 1959) was included in the 1993 and 1995 Whitney Biennials. In the years leading up to his death he expanded his subject matter to include Los Angeles–area gas stations and produced an important series of paintings of his boyfriend on the beach, titled "The Sean Pictures."
