Press Release
Matthew Marks is pleased to announce his next exhibition will be new works on paper by Brice Marden. This will be the first exhibition in New York of recent drawings and etchings by Marden in almost twenty years. The exhibition will include drawings made in New York, St. Barts, and the island of Hydra in Greece. Marden has been working on a series of paintings, drawings and etchings related to the writings of the Tang Buddhist landscape poet, Cold Mountain, for nearly two years. A number of the drawings in the exhibition are part of this series. Marden draws with sticks in black and colored inks and gouache, often on handmade paper.
Also on exhibit for the first time, will be the Cold Mountain series of etchings. The etchings, entitled Cold Mountain Series, Zen Studies 1-6, correspond to six paintings, each 9 x 12 feet, which will be exhibited at the Dia Center for the Arts this fall. The etchings are Marden's first foray into printmaking in over five years.
A fully illustrated catalogue including an interview with the artist by the painter Pat Steir will accompany the exhibition.
Brice Marden: Recent Drawings and Etchings will be on view at Matthew Marks Gallery, 1018 Madison Avenue (between Seventy-eighth and Seventy-ninth Streets).
