Essay by Sebastian Smee.
This book reproduces 168 drawings made by Freud when he was seventeen years old. The painter passed the first winter of World War II in a cottage in Capel Curig, Wales, with a school friend, David Kentish, and the poet Stephen Spender. It was during this stay that the majority of the drawings assembled here were realized, and the remainder were executed in London later that year. They are reproduced here actual size; most are published for the first time.
